The development of heat pump technology (especially air-source) has reduced costs and improved performance, making the heat pump cost-competitive, even compared to an eco-pea coal boiler. Moreover, when combined with a photovoltaic installation, it can offer almost cost-free heating (incidentally, it is one of the two most ecological – simultaneously renewable and very clean – heat sources, alongside modern wood-fired boilers and stoves).

How does a heat pump work?

Most of us have always had a heat pump at home. Every domestic refrigerator or freezer is one. As is an air conditioner. A heat pump operates on identical principles – only in reverse: instead of cooling, it heats (although it can also cool). More precisely: it is a reverse Carnot cycle, which we learned about in school in the context of the steam engine: In a steam engine, heat creates pressure, which is then converted into mechanical energy; efficiency here is rather poor, ranging from a few to maybe 30%.

A heat pump does the opposite: mechanical energy (an electrically driven compressor) generates pressure that allows heat to be transported from a lower temperature source to a higher temperature destination (opposite to its natural flow); efficiency is also “reversed”: several units of heat are obtained from a single unit of electricity.

This is the “magic” of a heat pump: it delivers several times more heat than the electricity it consumes. This is by no means a violation of the laws of physics – heat is not generated within the heat pump, but transported “from somewhere” – most often from the air, water, or groundwater. Hence the name: heat pump – as its operation is analogous to a water pump.

Comprehensive service – consulting, selection, execution

Galistra provides comprehensive services regarding consulting, selection, sales, as well as installation and maintenance of air-source heat pumps.
